Ozempic gallbladder risk — gallstones and cholecystitis on GLP-1s, why rapid weight loss raises gallstone risk, symptoms, and when to get checked.
Short answer: GLP-1 drugs including Ozempic are associated with increased gallbladder events — gallstones and cholecystitis — partly from rapid weight loss itself (a known gallstone risk). Right-upper-quadrant pain after meals, especially with nausea or fever, needs evaluation.
Why gallbladder issues happen
Two mechanisms: rapid weight loss promotes cholesterol gallstones (this happens with any fast weight loss, not just GLP-1s), and GLP-1s may reduce gallbladder emptying. Both raise stone risk.
Symptoms to watch
- Right upper abdominal pain, especially after fatty meals
- Pain radiating to right shoulder/back
- Nausea/vomiting with the pain
- Fever or jaundice (yellowing) — urgent
GLP-1 drugs show increased gallbladder events in trials; rapid weight loss itself is also a known cause — the two effects overlap.
